Sub Camps

The names of the sub camps of the international scout camp Anatolian 2008, in relation with the camp theme, are coming from famous Turkish sailors.

Sub Camp Barbaros

The original name of Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha was Hizir (Hizir Reis). The name Hayreddin was given by Suleiman the Magnificent to whom he was serving. The Europeans, on the other hand, called him Barbarosa or Barbaros (red beard) inspiring from his red beard. Between 1520 and 1525, Barbaros gained great amount of booties by attacking Mediterranean costs of Europe. He conquered Algeria in 1530. Within the following year, he defeated Andrea Doria, the admiral of Genoa, who attacked Şerşel. The Ottomans got into difficulty during the campaign towards Germany when Andrea Doria attacked to costs of the morea. As a result of this development, Suleiman the Magnificent called Barbaros to Istanbul and nominated him, after giving him the name “Hayreddin”, as the chief of the Ottoman naval forces (the so-called “great captain”) in 1533.

Sub Camp Çaka Bey

Çaka Bey is a Turkish commander and sailor who controlled Western Anatolia and gained lots of military successes by establishing the first Turkish naval war fleet in the period when Turks were diffusing into the Anatolian peninsula following the Malazgirt war in 1071. Moving independent from the Seljuk army, he conquered Izmir and made it a Turkish soil and then joined to Seljuk’s located in Iznik (Nicaea).

Sub Camp Piri Reis

Besides being an outstanding cartographer and a master of the science of the sea, Piri Reis was a captain that had a huge impact in the naval history of the Ottomans. He was the cousin of Kemal Reis, the master of the Turkish marine school. Piri Reis, with original name Muhiddin, was born in 1465 in Karaman. After the death of his uncle in 1511, he did not travel to overseas for a while and settled in Gallipoli. Here, he drew the first world map in 1513. The 1/3-piece containing the Atlantic Ocean, Iberian Peninsula, West Africa and the eastern costs of the “new world” America is the remaining part of this map. What made this map important worldwide was the fact that it contained the information on the map of America made by Christopher Coulomb which has still not been found out.

Sub Camp Oruç Reis

Oruç Reis (1470-1518) was an Ottoman sailor. He was the brother of Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha. He was the governor of Algeria for a while, too. Oruç Reis, who was one of the courageous “sea wolves” having the same responsibility of pre-attacking and preparing to conquest - as the soldiers on the territories did - on the sea, was never worried on his life or property during a war. He distributed the booty mostly to poor people and his sailors. Besides being handsome, noble, helpful and pitiful, he was also serious and aggressive. He was loved like a father by his sailors. He was not only a very good warrior, a commander being able to find the best solutions very easily in dangerous times; but also a fearless, courageous and intelligent person.
